Celebrated annually on 26 January, it marks the anniversary of the 1788 arrival of the First Fleet of British Ships at Port Jackson, New South Wales, and raising of the Flag of Great Britain at that site by Governor Arthur Phillip.
British convicts were originally transported to the Thirteen colonies in North America, but after the American Revolutionary War ended in 1783, the newly formed United States refused to accept further convicts
On 6 December 1785, Orders in Council were issued in London for the establishment of a penal colony in New South Wales, on land claimed for Britain by explorer James Cook in his first voyage to the Pacific in 1770.

Australia Day is arguably the most unique national day in the world because, rather than unite, it seems to divide Australians into different viewpoints.
One point of view…:
Without any prescriptive symbolism, the majority of Australians just use the day to have a barbeque or do some other pastime that takes advantage of the great things about the Australian lifestyle.
…the other:
Australians who have interpreted it to mean that the government is celebrating the invasion of Australia and the dispossession of Aborigines. These Australians usually use the day to participate in an Aboriginal protest march or call for the date to be changed.
Just as critics argue that Australia Day celebrates a state and society that have done Aborigines many wrongs, others argue there is nothing uniquely Australian to celebrate, on this or another day.
People will celebrate the day in parks all over the country, eating, playing cricket, surfing, etc. Very few of them, first and fifth generation alike, will be able to articulate anything about why we should celebrate Australia, other than that it is home.
And that is the point. Australia is a nation united by the idea that all are welcome who want to call the country home.
El Día de Australia (en inglés : Australia Day), celebrado el 26 de enero, es el día nacional oficial de Australia, marcado por festejos y celebraciones, así como actos cívicos.
El Día de Australia conmemora la llegada de Arthur Phillip con los 11 navíos de la First Fleet a Sídney que ocurrió en 1788.
En la mayor ciudad del país, se conmemora la fecha con el desfile de barcos próximo al Sydney Harbour Bridge. Hay presentaciones de artistas en el Darling Harbour, donde, al final del día, se reúnen los mejores barcos del desfile.
La noche termina con todos cantando Advance Australia Fair (himno nacional de Australia) en frente de la iluminada e imponente bandera australiana que ondea en aquella bahía.
